菊池渓谷には阿蘇の伏流水が豊富に湧き出る自然豊かな渓谷です。

気軽な靴で散策できる遊歩道も整備されています

菊池渓谷は、菊池市街地から東へ約 17ｋｍ、阿蘇外輪山の北西部の標高５００ｍ～８００ｍの間に位置し、 1,180haの広大な面積からなる”憩いの森”です。

菊池川の源をなす菊池渓谷は、うっそうとした天然生広葉樹で覆われ、その間をぬって流れる淡水は、大小さまざまな瀬と渕と滝をつくり、その変化に富む渓流と,美しい森林とがおりなす姿は絶景です。

　また、天然クーラーと称され、夏の平均水温は13度と低く、身を切るような清流は避暑地として最適であり、渓谷ぞいは、川のせせらぎと小鳥のさえずりで、楽しい夢をさそい、秋は渓流に映える紅葉がすばらしく、春は新緑、冬は全山に霧氷の花が咲くなど四季を通うじて訪れる人々の心をなごませてくれるところです。
